Brenden McGee secured his very first after-school job at the age of 16. He was working at Whitey’s Ice Cream in Moline, IL when his life took an unexpected turn.
One day, a woman drove up to the drive-thru window and Brenden could see that she was upset and crying.
The woman was sobbing so much that it was hard for him to understand what she wants to order. Finally, he understood that she needed to order a shake so, Brenden made the shake, handed it to the woman and said, “Your shake is on me tonight. You have a good night.”
A few days later, that same woman came back and asked to speak with a manager. Brenden’s manager, Rhonda, got worried that the woman might want to lodge a complaint against the teen.
But no one expected what came next…
The manager got to know why the woman was so upset on the day Brenden served her the shake. The woman was in mourning as her husband passed away just weeks ago.
She was having a bad time and was really touched by Brenden’s gesture. She asked Rhonda if he could get recognition.
The administrative staff placed a note under Brenden’s employee file. Brenden told KWQC, “It definitely is better to be kind and polite … we automatically have to be polite to people, but it’s always nice to go that extra mile.”
