A lesbian penguin couple at Sea Life London has recently become proud parents after the hatching of their first eggs.
The female Gentoo couple, Rocky and Marama, have been together for five years. They have received the eggs only after demonstrating the aquarium that they will make good parents.
The egg the couple has now received has been moved from its birth mother in order to relieve her of the burden of raising two chicks.
The fluff’s name and gender are yet not disclosed but this sure is the latest case of successful adoption of animals by same-sex animal couples.
General manager Graham McGrath said: ‘Marama and Rocky have taken to becoming parents like ducks to water – or should I say penguins.
‘Caring for a newborn is tough for anyone, from the sleepless nights to the constant feeding, yet this wonderful pair of penguin parents are completely unflappable and seem to be taking it all in their stride.’
Even though Marama and Rocky have become the parents for the first time but they have shown great parenting qualities by building the best nests in the colony over the past two years.
Marama is the older of the pair and is naturally more protective towards the chick while Rocky is keen to teach it about life as a penguin.
The proud new parents have the biggest nest in the colony and they each work on shifts giving each other time to swim and feed.
