Graduation is the time when families come together and celebrate the accomplishments of loved ones. As children, this makes us feel loved, and supported.
However, not everybody is lucky enough to get the same support from their families as others. Jeric R. Rivas of Sibuyan Island graduated from the prestigious La Concepcion College in San Jose Del Monte City, Phillippines earning a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology.
What would otherwise be a heartwarming moment with family and friends turned to be a heartbreaking one as his parents never showed up. So, Rivas sat in the hall alone and cried as none came to witness his achievement.
He wrote on Facebook: “I just felt that my tears were dripping, I just sat on the side. I feel jealous.”
He further said, “When I was in elementary school, I received the highest honour as the best student but my parents never came. They were supposed to go on stage and tie a medal around my neck but since they didn’t come, I refused the medal.”
When it was time for Rivas to receive his graduation degree, he failed to contain his disappointment and as he went to the stage, he started to cry.
He said, “As I walked up, one of my other professors were standing there on stage waiting for me and embraced me with a hug. At that moment, some of my sadness disappeared but I still cried in front of everyone.”
In his post, he thanks everyone for their support. He even thanks his parents, “To my parents, who up until today could not accept me in their life, if you’re reading this, this is me now and I hope I made you proud…”
