Julia Rubin of Griswold, Connecticut, is a single mom with four children. One of her sons, Brody is 4 years old and has spent nearly half his life in the hospital.
Brody was born premature weighing just over 2 pounds. As he grew older, his medical condition kept on deteriorating to the point he wouldn’t eat.
There were countless surgeries but little clarity. Finally, he was diagnosed with Chiari malformation III, which adversely affects in the part of the brain that controls balance.
Brody has trouble walking and he lives with severe chronic pain. He started talking one year ago after undergoing another surgery.
He also has extreme sensitivity to sun exposure and so he never gets to play outside. Brody burns so easily that a simple drive to his hospital can cause sun blisters on his face.
But two years later, it was time for Brody to step outside for the first time.
A deck was built in the backyard with a tent went over it, so as soon as Brody stepped outside, he’d be “outside.”
He was ecstatic to experience it for the first time.
Debbie Artinian with Make-A-Wish said, “I saw firsthand when his adorable face lit up as he walked ‘outside’ to see his cool ‘outdoor’ space.”
Rubin said Brody especially loved playing in the water pool since he can’t swim.
Rubin said, “I’m just really grateful for everybody helping me and helping Brody. Being a single mom is hard, so I would never be able to do this on my own.”
